Other things you should know about Light Rail.

LRVs take longer to come to a stop than road vehicles and cannot swerve to avoid contact.

LRVs are wider than the tracks. Stay well clear as they approach and leave them plenty of room.

The tracks are smooth and in wet weather the rail surface at intersections may be slippery.

Light rail vehicles have priority as they approach intersections and crossings. Please be alert and obey all traffic signals and signs.

The overhead wire is LIVE and carries 750 volts of power. Keep away!

Light Rail School Safety Excursions

Depot safety tour

Depot safety tours are designed to teach primary school students the importance of rail safety. Tours include a safety briefing, a tour of the depot yard, the opportunity to board a stationary light rail vehicle and even the chance to sit in the driver’s seat! Tours may also include the tram wash if available. For older students there is an option to include a short sustainability presentation.

 

Stop Safety Briefing

Stop safety briefings can be tailored to any age group and are designed to teach students important safety tips when travelling on the light rail. A member of the customer service team will meet your school group at a stop you are boarding from* provide a short briefing (1-2 minutes) and then assist your group to board the Light Rail Vehicle. (*Off peak travel times only).

Both Light Rail Safety Tour Options are free. Availability is limited.

ACT Policing’s Constable Kenny Koala program

This program is designed to educate child care and primary-aged school children on a range of safety themes, including traffic and road safety. The program is aligned with the Australian Curriculum. Canberra Metro is working in collaboration with the program in relation to light rail safety. Schools are encouraged to book a traffic and road safety presentation by Constable Kenny Koala. Whilst this will not be a specific presentation about the light rail, light rail safety will be underscored.

The TrackSAFE Foundation

The TrackSAFE Foundation is an Australia-wide, registered harm prevention charity dedicated to reducing near collisions, injuries and fatalities on the rail network. TrackSAFE Education is an initiative of the TrackSAFE Foundation. TrackSAFE Ed is an Australian curriculum-based rail safety education initiative focussing on students’ capabilities and making safe choices around the rail network. Safety education-resources for primary school students are available from the TrackSAFE Education website. Schools are encouraged to request a free TrackSAFE Education Pack, including colourful classroom and staff resources.
