Stage 2A Creates New Opportunities for Canberra Workers

CMET is proud to share a significant milestone in our preparation for Stage 2A of the light rail network, with the successful retrofit of the first CAF light rail vehicle with an On-Board Energy Storage System (OESS) or batteries, and the balance of the fleet now well underway. This technology will allow Stage 2A services to operate wire free through the city.

The OESS installation on the light rail vehicles in Canberra marks a significant achievement. Bringing this work to the ACT has created valuable opportunities for local suppliers and workers, supporting the growth of Canberra’s transport industry and strengthening regional skills.

CMET’s Project Director, Andrew Pearce, who is leading the retrofit program, said:
“It’s fantastic to see this level of innovation happening right here in Canberra. Working closely with the manufacturer onsite has given our team hands-on experience while also opening the door for local companies to contribute to the project.”

The retrofit program ensures our existing fleet will operate seamlessly alongside the new vehicles being introduced for Stage 2A. This approach not only enhances project efficiency but also demonstrates CMET’s commitment to building local capability and promoting long-term sustainability in public transport.

CMET thanks all staff, partners, and suppliers involved in achieving this milestone. Their collaboration reflects the dedication and expertise that keep Canberra’s light rail running safely, reliably, and confidently into the future.
