Meet Ash: Light Rail Driver

If you catch the light rail anytime soon, you might catch a glimpse of Ash.

A graduate in mechanical engineering, Ash first applied to work with Canberra Metro Operations because he was fascinated by locomotives. After working as a customer service officer for about a year, he has recently passed all his training to become a light rail vehicle driver! His favourite part of the job is now operating the light rail vehicle (LRV) and interacting with all his friendly co-workers and passengers.

Although he has observed less people using the light rail in recent months, Ash notes that “there hasn’t been a reduction in number of services that are operating, since it is crucial to have more services running to avoid overcrowding”.

Ash is proud to work as an LRV driver during these difficult times, as “there are people who don’t have access to other modes of transportation”. With the implementation of new sanitisation measures, the distribution of educational materials for the public, and protective gear to prevent the spread of COVID-19, “our services provide them the opportunity to travel safely when it is essential”.

When he’s not working, Ash enjoys walking to Yerrabi Pond in Gungahlin and getting some exercise. When he’s at home, he uses online platforms to keep in touch with his family and friends since the COVID-19 outbreak, as well as watching movies and listening to audiobooks to keep himself entertained.

He also enjoys flying his drone, which he uses to capture footage of beautiful local scenery. He is looking forward to travelling, when it is safe to do so, and filming in new locations.

Congratulations Ash, and thanks for all your hard work!
