Exploring Careers in Rail: CMET Hosts Smith Family Work Inspiration Day

In an exciting initiative aimed at showcasing rail career opportunities, CMET for the second year, welcomed 15 enthusiastic school students to our depot for a unique learning experience. Organised with The Smith Family’s Work Inspiration program, the event aimed to introduce students to the inner workings of Canberra’s light rail system and inspire their career aspirations.

The day began with a warm welcome from CMET staff, who eagerly shared insights into their roles and career journeys within the organisation. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and gain firsthand knowledge about the various career paths some of our own staff have experienced.

One of the highlights of the day was providing the students with first-hand experience of an emergency braking scenario on board a light rail vehicle (LRV). Guided by an experienced LRV driver, students were reminded about the impacts on others that risk-taking behaviours around the rail tracks can cause, especially the challenges faced by our drivers.

“The students were surprised how abruptly the LRVs can stop even when travelling at slow speeds” said Driver Gary, reflecting on the event. “It was also great to see their excitement as they learned about different roles and how our team works together to keep Canberra moving safely.”

For many students, the day left a lasting impression. “I never realised how many different jobs are involved in running the light rail,” remarked one student, highlighting the impact of the interactive sessions. “It’s made me think differently about what I might want to do in the future.”

CMET is committed to supporting educational initiatives that empower young students to explore diverse career paths and develop essential skills for the future workforce. Events like the Smith Family Work Inspiration Day not only educate but also inspire the next generation of professionals in the transport industry.
