Rail Safety Week is an annual community awareness week held in Australia and New Zealand designed to engage the community in safe rail practices.
This year, Rail Safety Week is running from Monday 10 to Sunday 16 August 2026, marking its 21st year. CMET is actively supporting the TrackSAFE initiative for an eighth consecutive year, to promote a heightened awareness of the importance of rail safety.
Light rail has become part of the daily commute for many Canberrans, which is why it’s important we are all aware of our personal responsibilities in ensuring the safety of ourselves and others.
Rail safety is everyone’s responsibility.
Whether you’re walking, cycling, driving or travelling on public transport, simple actions can help keep you and others safe around our light rail network.
Remember to: · Always follow traffic lights, signs and road markings. · Stop, look and listen before crossing tracks. · Stay alert and avoid distractions, such as mobile phones and headphones, near tracks and stations. · Never enter restricted areas or walk along the rail corridor. · Cross tracks only at designated crossing points. · Take extra care when cycling or riding a scooter near light rail tracks. As Canberra’s light rail network continues to grow and connect more people across the city, ongoing education and awareness play an important role in encouraging safe behaviours and reducing the likelihood of incidents.

Rail safety poster competition
This year graphic design students from Gungahlin, Dickson, and Daramalan Colleges and Burgmann Anglican School created a range of unique safety posters as part of a rail safety poster competition, submitting 49 entries.
The four winning designs, displayed below, have been created by Daramalan College student Anika Oswald, Burgmann Anglican School student Monogna Thobula, and Gungahlin College students Charlie James and Tammy Au. These will be used as safety wraps on the sides of two light rail vehicles and used to promote the Rail Safety Week message.
