Smoking Ceremony Welcomes New Light Rail Vehicles to Ngunnawal Country

CMET was proud to host a smoking ceremony welcoming both our new and existing light rail vehicles onto Ngunnawal Country.

The ceremony was conducted by Mitch Daley, a proud descendant of the Ngunnawal and Wiradjuri peoples. This significant cultural tradition symbolises cleansing, connection, and respect, providing a safe and positive pathway for the integration of these vehicles into our community.

A smoking ceremony is a deeply rooted practice in Indigenous Australian culture, performed to cleanse the space, people, and objects involved while creating a connection to Country. It is a moment of reflection and respect, honouring the rich heritage of the First Nations peoples.

For CMET, this event represents our ongoing commitment to recognising and respecting the culture, traditions, and contributions of the First Nations peoples whose land we operate on every day.

With the ceremony completed, the new light rail vehicles will now undergo final preparations to join our fleet, continuing to support Canberra’s growing community with sustainable transport options.
