Rail Safety Week 2024

Rail Safety Week is an annual community awareness week held in Australia and New Zealand designed to engage the community in safe rail practices.

This year, Rail Safety Week is running from Monday 5 to Sunday 11 August 2024, marking its 19th year. CMET is actively supporting the TrackSAFE initiative for a sixth consecutive year, to promote a heightened awareness of the importance of rail safety.

Light rail has become part of the daily commute for many Canberrans, which is why it’s important we are all aware of our personal responsibilities in ensuring the safety of ourselves and others.

This year we ask that you always STOP ON RED. It’s not a suggestion.

Pause your tunes. Look and listen for light rail.

  • Be aware of your surroundings when walking around or across the light rail tracks.
  • Please pay attention around the tracks and stops.
  • Limit distractions such as mobile phones and headphones.

Phone down. Look up. Let’s stay rail safe.

  • Light rail is part of Canberra’s landscape. It’s vital that we take important steps to be safe. We all need to be vigilant when near light rail tracks whether we’re passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, e-scooter riders or motorists.
  • A moment of distraction can change your life forever. If everyone follows the rules, we all stay rail safe!
  • If you are concerned about your safety or the safety of others, please use the Emergency Help Points on platforms and on-board light rail vehicles to contact staff.

Stay safe. Stand behind the line.

  • Always stand behind the yellow line at the light rail platforms.
  • Only cross the tracks at the designated walkways.
  • Be aware of your surroundings when walking around or across the light rail tracks.
  • Only cross on a green pedestrian signal, as a light rail vehicle may be hidden or approaching from the opposite direction.

Staying rail safe as a road user.

  • Road users, be aware of and follow traffic signals, intersections and road line markings when driving near the tracks.
  • Cyclists, never cross in front of a moving light rail vehicle and avoid braking on the rail tracks.
  • Perform U-turns only where U-turns are signed as permitted.
  • Always obey traffic lights and road signs. If everyone follows the rules, we all stay safe!

Rail safety poster competition

This year graphic design students from Gungahlin, Dickson and Daramalan colleges created a range of unique safety posters as part of a rail safety poster competition, submitting a record-breaking 64 entries.

The four winning designs, displayed below, have been created by Daramalan College students Lachlan Bell and Liam Hunter, Dickson College student Bryan Zhao, and Gungahlin College student Alexander Fitzsimons. These will be used as safety wraps on the sides of two light rail vehicles and used to promote the Rail Safety Week message across our channels during the week.

In addition, you also have the opportunity to vote for your favourite safety poster in the People’s Choice award! Voting closes on midnight on Friday 31st August 2024.
